Ultra-High-Intensity Laser–Matter Interactions
SCAPA investigates the interaction of ultra-high-intensity laser pulses with matter, exploring the extreme physical conditions that can be created when intense laser energy is concentrated into an extremely short period of time. These interactions provide opportunities to study fundamental plasma physics, generate energetic particles and radiation, and investigate new approaches to high-energy-density science.
Exploring Extreme Laser–Matter Interactions
When an ultra-high-intensity laser pulse interacts with a material, the laser’s electromagnetic field can drive electrons to relativistic energies, rapidly ionise matter and generate complex plasma dynamics. Under suitable conditions, these interactions can produce extremely strong electromagnetic fields, energetic electron and ion beams, and intense X-ray and gamma-ray radiation.
The resulting behaviour depends on the laser intensity, pulse duration, target material and geometry. By controlling these parameters, researchers can investigate different interaction regimes, from relativistic laser–plasma dynamics to the generation of energetic particles and secondary radiation.
Research Opportunities and Applications
Ultra-high-intensity laser–matter interactions provide a versatile platform for exploring a range of scientific questions and potential applications, including:
Relativistic plasma physics: Investigating electron dynamics, plasma instabilities and nonlinear processes in extreme electromagnetic fields.
High-energy-density physics: Creating and studying matter under extreme conditions relevant to astrophysical environments and laboratory plasma research.
Energetic particle and radiation sources: Exploring mechanisms for generating high-energy electrons, ions, X-rays and gamma rays.
Strong-field physics: Investigating nonlinear interactions between intense electromagnetic fields and matter, including regimes relevant to future strong-field quantum electrodynamics experiments.
Advanced diagnostics and imaging: Using laser-driven particles and radiation to probe dense materials and rapidly evolving physical processes.
Research at SCAPA
At SCAPA, research into ultra-high-intensity laser–matter interactions combines advanced laser technology, carefully designed targets and sophisticated diagnostics. Experiments investigate how laser energy is transferred to particles and radiation, how plasma conditions influence interaction dynamics, and how these processes can be controlled to achieve specific experimental outcomes.
A central objective is to improve understanding of the underlying physics while developing reliable experimental techniques for generating and characterising energetic particles and radiation. This research contributes to the wider development of high-intensity laser science and supports future investigations in plasma physics, radiation science and high-energy-density physics.
